Henri Rousseau The Dream

Henri Rousseau The Dream (1910)

The Dream is a large oil-on-canvas painting created by Henri Rousseau in 1910, one of more than 25 Rousseau paintings with a jungle theme. Essentially he was self-taught and is considered to be a naive or primitive painter. When Pablo Picasso happened upon a painting by Rousseau being sold on the street as a canvas to be painted over, the younger artist instantly recognised Rousseau’s genius and went to meet him. In 1908 Picasso held a banquet in his studio in Le Bateau-Lavoir in Rousseau’s honour.

Vincent Van Gogh Blossoming Almond Tree

Vincent Van Gogh Blossoming Almond Tree Poster

Blossoming Almond Tree or Almond Blossoms (1890) is a painting by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. Theo wrote to his brother Vincent on January 31, 1890 to announce the birth of his son, Vincent Willem Van Gogh. As a means of celebration, Van Gogh began work on a painting for Theo and his wife. He was very close to his brother and he sought to symbolize new life in the flowers of the almond tree for the birth of baby Vincent. The composition is unlike any other of Van Gogh’s paintings.

Vincent Van Gogh Starry Night Over The Rhone

Vincent Van Gogh – Starry Night Over the Rhone (1888)

Starry Night Over the Rhone (September 1888) is one of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings of Arles at night time in Arles. It was painted at a spot on the bank of the Rhone River that was only a one or two-minute walk from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine which Van Gogh was renting at the time. The night sky and the effects of light at night provided the subject for some of his more famous paintings, including Cafe Terrace at Night (painted earlier the same month) and the later canvas from Saint-Remy, The Starry Night.

Hieronymus Bosch The Garden Of Earthly Delights

Hieronymus Bosch The Garden Of Earthly Delights (1500)

The Garden of Earthly Delights is the modern title given to a triptych painted by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. It has been housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939. Dating from between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was about 40 or 50 years old, it is his best-known and most ambitious, complete work. It reveals the artist at the height of his powers; in no other painting does he achieve such complexity of meaning or such vivid imagery. The triptych is painted in oil on oak and is formed from a square middle panel flanked by two other oak rectangular wings that close over the center as shutters. The outer wings, when folded, show a grisaille painting of the earth during the biblical narrative of Creation. The three scenes of the inner triptych are probably (but not necessarily) intended to be read chronologically from left to right. The left panel depicts God presenting Eve to Adam, the central panel is a broad panorama of figures, fantastical animals, oversized fruit and hybrid stone formations. The right panel is a hellscape and portrays the torments of damnation.
