Gustav Klimt The Kiss

Gustav Klimt The Kiss Art Print

Gustav Klimt The Kiss Art Nouveau Jugendstil Gold ~ The Kiss was painted by the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt between 1907 and 1908, the highpoint of his “Golden Period”, when he painted a number of works in a similar gilded style. A perfect square, the canvas depicts a couple embracing, their bodies entwined in elaborate robes decorated in a style influenced by both linear constructs of the contemporary Art Nouveau style and the organic forms of the earlier Arts and Crafts movement. The work is composed of oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance. The painting is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is a symbol of Vienna Jugendstil (Viennese Art Nouveau) and is considered Klimt’s most popular work.

Vincent Van Gogh Night After Millet

Vincent Van Gogh Night (After Millet)
1889 Fine Art Painting
Copies by Vincent van Gogh form an important group of paintings executed by Vincent van Gogh between 1887 and early 1890. While at Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France, where Van Gogh admitted himself, he strived to have subjects during the cold winter months. Seeking to be reinvigorated artistically, Van Gogh did more than 30 copies of works by some of his favorite artists. About twenty-one of the works were copies after, or inspired by, Jean-Francois Millet. Rather than replicate, Van Gogh sought to translate the subjects and composition through his perspective, color, and technique. Spiritual meaning and emotional comfort were expressed through symbolism and color. His brother Theo van Gogh would call the pieces in the series some of his best work.

Theophile Steinlen Tournee Du Chat Noir

Theophile Alexandre Steinlen – Le Chat Noir (1896)

Le Chat Noir was a nineteenth-century entertainment establishment, in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. Theophile Steinlen’s 1896 Art Nouveau poster is an advertisement for a tour to other cities of the Le Chat Noir’s troupe of cabaret entertainers. Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker who moved to Paris’ bohemian Montmartre section in 1883 and was friends with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Aristide Bruant and Adolphe Willette. His permanent home, Montmartre and its environs, was a favorite subject throughout Steinlen’s life and he often painted scenes of some of the harsher aspects of life in the area. In addition to paintings and drawings, he also did sculpture on a limited basis, most notably figures of cats that he had great affection for as seen in many of his paintings.
